European politicians have been quick to praise the EU’s climate leadership. In press briefings and interviews they promised to translate the commitments on paper into real action at home. And yet months later their promises have amounted to nothing, and time to act is running out.
The flagship EU initiative to fight climate change - the carbon trading system - is defunct and urgently in need of reform. The current proposal is dangerously weak - it lets the carbon-burning polluters off the hook for the damage to our climate. It is now being revised by the European Parliament - and it is our last chance to make it work! Now is the time for the EU to really lead by example - let’s make the decision makers hear our demand for ambitious climate action!
